Borland's ISO compliant C/C++ compiler(version 5.5) has been released as a free download. (This is the same compiler as used in Borland Builder 5.) However, it is a command line version only; you create your .cpp filesin Notepad or edit, and compile and run them from an MS-DOS promptwindow.
- Download and install the compiler tools in the default location. (Just run the .exe file and click on OK every time.)
- Copy the files bcc32.cfg andilink32.cfg to the directory'C:BorlandBCC55bin'.
- Edit your AutoExec.bat file by adding the line:SET PATH=C:BorlandBCC55bin;%PATH%That should be it! You should now be able to run the Borland tools from an MS-DOS Prompt window. (Note that a reboot will be necessary to force the system to re-read theAutoExec.bat file.)
Note adding this line may affect other Borland C++ tools you hadpreviously installed, such as Borland C++ 5.02 or Borland Builder. In this case you should not modify AutoExec.bat. Instead follow these steps:
- Make a separate SetUpBCC.BAT file to set the PATH.
- Make a copy of the MS-DOS Prompt shortcut under theStart button.
- Rename the shortcut copy to 'Borland C++'. List the SetUpBCC.BAT file in the properties of the shortcutunder Properties-->Program-->Batch file.
- The new shortcut can be put on the Start button or left on the Desktop.
- If DOSKEY is not part of AutoExec.batalready (it probably is), add it there at the end of the file.
Make sure you get a MS-DOS Prompt window by using your short-cutand not the MS-DOS Prompt short-cut. (One way to tell is by using a different icon for your C++ shortcutthan the default.)
Put a 'Hello.cpp' program in your current directory. This file should contain a short working program. Then type:

If not, you probably don't have the .BATfile listed correctly in the shortcut, or you made a typo in theSET PATH statement. To find out which, close your C++ window. Then add the following line to your SetUpBcc.BAT file:
echo testing one two threeSave your changes and run your short-cut again. If the window doesn't show 'testing one two three' then your.BAT file isn't being run at all. If you do see the 'testing one two three' message the problem must be with theSET PATH statement.
If you determine your .BAT file isn'tbeing run, make sure you have the complete pathname listedin the short-cut property 'Batch File:' (and not the'Cmd Line:' property). Here's what I am using:
C:BorlandBCC55SetUpBCC.batFinally, if the problem seems to be a typo in yourSET PATH command, make sure it looks like this(it is not case-sensitive, but note there are no spaces around the equals sign):
